讲座内容
It has been more than 30 years since the proposal of World Englishes (WE) and almost two decades since the proposal of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). Both WE and ELF were designed to challenge the ownership of English and have witnessed multilingualism and multiculturalism in English Language Teaching (ELT). A recent proposal of Global Englishes Language Teaching (GELT), incorporating the notions of WE and ELF, has been applied in several Asian contexts (Fang & Ren, 2018; Galloway & Rose, 2014, 2018; Sung, 2013, 2015); however, ELT in many English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts still favours the traditional native-oriented approach. In this speech, I will introduce the concept of Global Englishes (GE), which is an umbrella term that encompasses WE and ELF. I will also address the controversies and difficulties of adopting GELT that are caused by the native-oriented approach and the standardised format of assessment. Next, I will discuss how an optional course entitled Introduction to English as a World Language applied GELT and how it changed the students’ attitudes towards English after they completed the course. Therefore, I will suggest that stakeholders’ awareness of GE needs to be raised against the backdrop of globalisation and that the notion of GE should be included in college ELT to help prepare students for future intercultural communication. Finally, I will conclude my speech by requesting the implementation of a GE-informed approach for ELT.
